THE VETERINARY SPECIALIST

What diploma qualifies you for this title ?

A veterinary specialist is a highly qualified professional with a diploma from the European College (EBVS) or American College (ABVS) in a specific area of veterinary medicine.

Like medical specialists in humans, veterinary specialists are committed to providing high-quality care and cutting-edge expertise in their specialist field.

To obtain the title of specialist, a veterinarian must undergo additional in-depth training (through internship, assistantship or a specialized internship followed by a residency), which usually take 5 to 6 years and allow a veterinarian to perfect themselves in their domain of interest.

At the end of the residency, the veterinary specialist has to successfully pass very rigorous examinations in order to obtain their specialist diploma.

BECOMING A SPECIALIST

In Belgium, the only diplomas recognised by the Order of Veterinarias are those granted by :

  • The European Board of Veterinary Specialists (EBVS®), which supervises the various European Colleges in each discipline (ECVx = European College of Veterinary…)

  • The American Board of Veterinary Specialists (ABVS®), which oversees the various American Colleges in each discipline (ACVx = American College of Veterinary…) and the American Boards of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP®).
